Region

Franken, or Franconia in English, is a wine-growing region in the northwest of Germany's historic state of Bavaria. Though Bavaria may be more famous for its beer, Franken boasts a proud viticultural tradition and is one of the most unique regions in the country. There are just over 6,100 hectares (15,073 ac) of vines planted in Franken and around 80 percent of these are white grape varieties. Here, Riesling plays second fiddle to the often overlooked Silvaner and Müller-Thurgau. Indeed, Silvaner lays claim as Franken's leading grape variety and is one of the only places in the world where it outperforms Riesling.

Varietal

Silvaner is an underrated, neutral-scented, white-wine grape used widely in western Germany, and just across the Rhine in Alsace where it is spelled Sylvaner. Tiny quantities can also be found in Alto Adige, northern Italy, where it is a specialty of the Isarco Valley. One of the world's less-revered wine grapes as its reputation falls far behind that of other Germanic varieties such as Riesling and Grüner Veltliner, Silvaner is something of a quiet achiever. It has its devotees in various countries outside of Germany including Romania, Slovakia, Croatia, Austria and the United States.

Food Pairing

Enjoy with lean fish, vegetarian dishes, veal and poultry.

Tasting Notes

The wine is a pale bright yellow, greenish tones, broad aromas of fine herbs. Very varied with notes of apple and pear. The palate is acidic, long and leaves a soft bitter finish that characterizes the variety.
