Region

Lazio is a region in central Italy, and home to the ancient capital city of Rome. The region's reputation is mainly based on its white wines, the mainstay grape varieties being Trebbiano, Malvasia di Candia and Malvasia Puntinata. Traditionally these wines were fat, rounded, abboccato and made for immediate consumption. Today the styles are lighter, drier and crisper thanks to modern vinification methods.

Varietal

Merlot is a red wine grape variety with strong historic ties to Bordeaux and the southwest of France. Currently the the most searched-for wine on our database that is made from the grape is Petrus, from Pomerol. It is the predominant variety in most wines from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, the area in which the variety originated.Merlot is now widely planted in wine regions across the world and, in terms of the volumes of wine produced internationally, it is rivaled only by its Bordeaux companion, Cabernet Sauvignon. Its characteristically reliable ripening is a main factor behind its increased presence over recent decades in the Médoc and Entre-Deux-Mers (where it has mostly replaced white varieties) areas of Bordeaux.

Food Pairing

Pairs brilliantly with cassoulet or hearty casseroles, smoked beef or cured sausages, and roasted lamb with mint sauce.

Tasting Notes

Deep, ruby red color, a wide aromatic range of scents in which delicious vanilla notes, small red fruit, layers of jam and sweet spices combine. The taste appears to have a full aristocratic roundness and softness, typical of Merlot, with quite elegant, agreeable and lingering flavors.
