Tasting Notes
An intense bouquet of grapefruit, pineapple, peach and fresh blossoms spoils our nose. The mouth feel is soft, fresh and pure. Nice balance and a hint of almond in the aftertaste.
Food Pairing
Enjoy with herb-grilled or rotisserie chicken, light fish and pasta dishes, or mixed snack plates including cheeses, fruits, and nuts.
Serve chilled, 8 to 10°C (46 to 50°F).
The Region
Cisterna d'Asti is a small DOC of the Piedmont wine region in the far northwest of Italy, created in 2002. Unlike the case with Barbera d'Asti DOCG or many other local DOCs, Cisterna is not a grape variety. This title covers red wines produced around the village of Cisterna d'Asti, and neigboring communes right in the centre of Piedmont. Cisterna d'Asti wine is made predominantly from Croatina, which must account for 80 percent of the blend. The balance may consist of other non-aromatic red varieties sanctioned under Piedmont's wine laws. Grapes used to make wines sold under other local DOCs (Nebbiolo, Barbera and Dolcetto) are the obvious candidates.
The Grape
Arneis is a white wine grape variety from Italy's much-respected Piedmont wine region. In a story shared by several renascent grape varieties (most obviously Viognier), Arneis has been rescued from the verge of extinction and is now enjoying something of a revival. By the 1960s, just a few hectares of Arneis vines remained, and only a handful of producers were making the wine. There are now more than 605 hectares (1500 acres) of Arneis vines in Piedmont. It produces floral-scented white wines, whose delicate aromas belie the wines' relatively full bodies and generous flavors – typically of pear and apricot rounded out with a creamy hint of hazelnut.
